AI is a capability we use. It is not what the company is.

Plenty of manual work is worth automating: routing and approvals, data entry between systems, document handling, reconciliation, status chasing, report assembly. Most of it does not need a model at all — it needs a system that knows the rules and applies them consistently.

Where a model genuinely helps is with input that is not structured: reading a document, extracting fields from something that arrives in fifty different layouts, classifying a request, drafting a first response for someone to approve. There we use it, and we design carefully around what happens when it is wrong.

The measure that matters is not how much of a process is automated. It is how much of it can be trusted without supervision. An automation that handles ninety per cent of cases and quietly mishandles the rest is worse than no automation, so we design the exception path before the happy path.

How we approach it

Understand the process before automating it.

Automating a bad process makes it fail faster. The first step is almost always to establish what the process really is, including the parts nobody documented.

Observe

Map the process as it actually runs today, including the workarounds and the exceptions people handle informally.

Decide

Separate what should be automated with rules, what needs a model, and what is better left to a person with better tools.

Build

Implement the automation with validation, confidence thresholds and an explicit exception queue rather than silent failure.

Measure

Track the rate that completes without intervention, and the rate that completes correctly. They are not the same number.

Extend

Widen coverage as the exception patterns become clear, instead of promising full automation on day one.
